What happened to the original R2-D2 app?
Sphero's R2-D2 and R2-Q5 were controlled by the Star Wars Droids App by Sphero. After Sphero stopped selling its Star Wars droids, that app was removed from the App Store and Google Play. Many owners ended up searching for old APK files or using Sphero Edu, a coding app that was never meant to recreate the character experience.
Legacy Bot Controller is an independent app built to fill that gap. It connects to your droid over Bluetooth Low Energy and gives you a proper controller again.

R2-D2 app questions
Does the Sphero R2-D2 app still work?
The original Star Wars Droids App by Sphero has been removed from the App Store and Google Play. Legacy Bot Controller is an independent replacement that controls R2-D2 and R2-Q5 on current iOS and Android devices.
Does it work with R2-Q5?
Yes. R2-Q5 is the hardware twin of R2-D2, so it gets every R2-D2 feature, plus its own version of the Scream Run! animation.
Can I switch R2-D2 between bipod and tripod?
Yes. A stance toggle switches between tripod (third leg down, ready to drive) and bipod (leg tucked in). A head control slider also turns the dome up to 180 degrees left or right while you drive.
Do the AI features need an internet connection?
Only once. The AI model is a one time download of about 500 MB. After that, voice control and conversation run fully on your phone with no internet needed.
